Middlesex County offers various recycling programs that are free to North Brunswick and county residents. For more information, click the links below. Always check the county website for important updates or changes to the schedule before you go.

Household Hazardous Waste

Held a number of times a year throughout the county. The household hazardous waste drop-off accepts: Adhesives Aerosol Cans, Antifreeze, Brake Fluid, Car Batteries, Cleaners, Drain Cleaners, Fire Extinguishers, Flares, Fluorescent Bulbs (no broken bulbs), Gasoline, Gas/Oil Mix, Kerosene, Lighter Fluid, Mercury, Propane Tanks, Stains/Varnishes, Thermometers, Thermostats.

Rechargeable & Button Cell Batteries (individually bag each battery or tape each terminal end prior to transport).

Alkaline batteries can be disposed of in regular trash.

Asbestos containing materials: call to pre-register, must be double bagged.

Paint Drop-Off

Paint Drop-Off Days are scheduled on weekends, from 8am to noon at various locations, according to the schedule below. This service is available free of charge, and is open to Township and county residents.

Acceptable items include late (water based) paint, oil-based pain, stains, varnishes, lacquers, thinners, spray paint (aerosol), and driveway sealer. All items must be labeled.

Unacceptable items include empty containers or latex paint that is dried out. Empty and completely dry paint cans can be disposed of in your regular trash by taking off the lid and placing the cans into a garbage bag. Also unacceptable are household hazardous wastes and/or contractor business generated material.

Oil, Tires and Car Batteries Pick-up Request

The township picks up motor oil, tires and car batteries on the second Wednesday of every month. Residents are limited to 5 gallons of motor oil in a plastic bottle with a screw top (not a 2-liter soda bottle) and 4 car tires off the rim per pick-up. Call DPW at (732) 297-1134 to make an appointment.

In addition, Middlesex County offers a residential tire drop-off program for County residents. Each house is limited to 4 tires, per month. It is for automobile and light truck tires only, no oversized tires. The program is free of charge to North Brunswick and county residents. Residents must see and attendant before unloading their vehicle.

Paper Shredding

The County hosts paper shredding events multiple times throughout the year across the county. Events are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or until shredding truck is filled, whichever occurs first. Events are held rain or shine.

Paper shredding events are for RESIDENTIAL PAPER ONLY. NO BUSINESSES. There is a limit of 5 file boxes or 100 pounds per car.

DO NOT BRING: newspapers, magazines, hardcover books, junk mail, photos, x-rays, CDs, shredded paper or garbage. Loads containing unacceptable items may be rejected.

Paper must be in a manageable container – no plastic bags.

Cooking Oil Recycling

Middlesex County offers a cooking oil recycling program throughout the county, year-round. This program is for Middlesex County residents only with (proof of residency is required).

The recycling program is for liquid vegetable oils only; NO shortening, coconut oil, lard or motor oil. Business are NOT welcome to utilize this resource. Residents must see an attendant before unloading their vehicle.

Electronic Waste Disposal 

E-waste (computers, printers, monitors, TV’s) is not collected by the township curbside. A regulatory change now bans them from going to the landfill. Residents can drop off items to New Tech Recycling at 600 Apgar Drive Somerset NJ 08873. Please contact them at (732) 564-3110 for hours of operation.
